Over The Ocean Socks

£4.25

With a plethora of stunning hand dyed sock yarns available, when creating the ‘Over The Ocean’ jumper patterns, I couldn’t resist the urge to create a matching sock pattern. The slip stitch cables really showcase special yarns by accentuating colour variations and speckles that create a beautiful ‘undulating’ texture representative of the flowing tides of a calm ocean glistening in the sun.

Also available to purchase on Ravelry and LoveCrafts

The Over The Ocean Socks are knit from the top down and in the round. The cuff features a 1×1 twisted rib and then the undulating slip stitch cable design is worked around the whole leg. This pattern continues into the heel which has a heel flap and gusset construction. The sole is knit in stockinette whilst the cable design continues along the top of the foot until the toe, which is worked in a classic wedge shape.

Sizing Overview

**Please scroll to the end of this listing to find full sizing information and schematic.

Baby (Toddler, Child) (Small, Medium, Large)

Size labels provide a rough guide only, I strongly recommend choosing a size based on the actual foot circumference and intended amount of negative ease rather than relying on the size labels alone.

Finished Foot Circumference
4.5” (5.5”, 6.5”) (7”, 8”, 9”) / 10cm (14cm, 16.5cm) (17.5cm, 20cm, 22.5cm)

0”-0.5” (0cm-1.25cm) negative ease is recommended for the Baby, Toddler and Child sizes and 1” (2.5cm) negative ease is recommended for the Small, Medium and Large sizes.

Pick a size between 0”-1” (0cm-2.5cm) smaller than the actual foot circumference, depending on recipient and intended fit.

Yarn Requirements

The sample sock is a Medium size worn with the recommended 1” (2.5cm) negative ease. Knit with hand dyed yarn from Evizen Design using her ‘light fingering’ base in the colourway ‘Morgana’.

Suggested Yarns

Any light fingering/sock weight yarn with approximately 425m (465yds) per 100g.

Required meterage (yardage)

Baby (Toddler, Child) (Small, Medium, Large)

200 (235, 285) (320, 355, 450)m / 219 (257, 312) (350, 388, 492)yds

This equates to 1 (1, 1) (1, 1, 2) skeins of light fingering/sock weight yarn with approximately 425m (465yds) per 100g.

*Required meterage (yardage) is based on the specified gauge and recommended yarn, plus extra for swatching and allowing for a longer than average foot length. Making the cuff, leg or foot longer than instructed may require more yarn.

Gauge

32 stitches and 40 rounds = 4×4” (10x10cm) in the slipped cable pattern. Swatching in the round is recommended and blocking the swatch is essential.

Needles

The instructions are intended to be ‘needle type neutral’ so work whether you are using Magic loop, a small ‘sock’ circular needle or DPN’s. For the cuff and leg, a marker is used to mark the beginning/end of the round and the stitches can be distributed on the needles as you wish. For the gusset, foot and toe, 2 markers are used to separate the sole and instep stitches. Unless you choose to distribute the stitches differently, if using Magic loop, this corresponds to the start of needle 1 and the start of needle 2. For DPN’s, the start of needle 1 and the start of needle 3.

*2.5mm (US size 1.5) OR size needed to obtain gauge. DPN’s or long circular needle if using the Magic loop method.
A short circular e.g. 9” (23cm) needle may be used for the cuff, leg and foot of the sock but I recommend DPN’s or Magic loop for the heel and toe.

*Due to the slipped cable pattern, the fabric will relax with blocking but will not have the same stretch capabilities as a stockinette or ribbed sock. For the Baby, Toddler and Child sizes, it may be beneficial to size up to a 2.75mm (US size 2) needle for the leg section to help the sock pull up over the heel more easily.

Notions

3 stitch markers.
Cable needle, if required*.

Required Techniques

Long tail cast-on method (or preferred stretchy cast on method for socks).

Knitting in the round.

Cable knitting. For the most pleasant knitting experience, the slipped cables are best worked without a cable needle. If you have not cabled without a cable needle before then this is a great time to try!

Videos detailing how to work the slipped cables stitches without a cable needle are available.

Grafting of the toe stitches to close. Grafting demonstration videos are also available on my website, if required.
